Chaplain's Assistants Take Initiative to Make A Wish Come True for Long-term Villa Pomerado Patient, Darren Hoferer

August 16, 2007

Last month Coni McCall, Chappy Dave’s Administrative Assistant, and “Mom” to all of the Chaplain’s Assistants, got wind that Pomerado Hospital’s new spokesman, Charger's running back and NFL's best player, LaDainian Tomlinson (LT) would be at the hospital for a press conference.

Darren Hoferer's wish comes true as he meets LaDainian Tomlinson and has his Charger jersey signed.

Knowing that friend Darren Hoferer, a long-term Villa Pomerado patient, is a huge Charger and LT fan, Coni and Chaplain Assistant Shirley Kronheimer took the initiative to sneak Darren from the Villa, dressed in his Charger garb, and patiently waited outside where the press conference was being held in hopes to catch LT on his way out and make a wish come true for Darren.

Darren was all smiles as LT signed his Charger jersey and his wish came true. The photos from the event are framed and proudly hanging on Darren’s wall. Darren said “I asked LT if he was a born again Christian and LT said yes.” That made Darren very happy to know that LT is a fellow Christian. Darren was saved as a result of the friendships developed through MOTE’s chaplaincy program at Pomerado Hospital and Villa Pomerado. When you talk to Darren today you instantly see the joy of the Lord spilling out of him, and he doesn’t hesitate to tell you about his love for Jesus.

Darren, a quadriplegic, has been a resident at the Villa Pomerado for over a decade. Darren was stabbed several times and bled out before the paramedics could get to him. It truly is a miracle that Darren is still here today. God had plans for Darren, and is actively working through him to encourage others at the Villa Pomerado. Darren, in his wheelchair decorated with Harley Davidson decals, shared with us “It was because of something my friend did that I was stabbed.” Darren continues to say “I forgave my friend and the person that stabbed me . . . if it had not been for them I wouldn’t be here and I wouldn’t know Jesus as my Lord and Savior.” Although Darren is immobile and struggles to speak, he will tell you that he doesn’t have a care in the world. This is a man that has been truly transformed through the Holy Spirit and loves the Lord with all his heart, mind, and soul.

Darren is one out of many thousands of patients that MOTE’s Chaplain's Assistants minister to at Pomerado Hospital and Villa Pomerado. Through MOTE, Inc., Chappy Dave has trained and actively mentors over 30 Chaplain’s Assistants.

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here Am I. Send me!’” (Isaiah 6:8) Chappy Dave says “The hospital is our mission field. When we arrive at the hospital we step in prayed up, filled with the Spirit, and say to the Lord 'Here Am I. Send me!'"  There are so many hurting people and lost souls at the hospital, and so many opportunities to share the love of Jesus and lead people into a relationship with their Lord and Savior.

Lives are transformed daily because of the active love and compassion of the Chaplain’s Assistants. Our mission at the hospital needs continued prayer. We are looking for people that are willing to pray at least one day a week for our Chaplain’s, the patients and hospital staff. If the Lord is tugging on your heart to volunteer for our prayer ministry please email us at info@mote.ws. You can also help make a difference by sponsoring a Chaplain Assistant by donating $25 a month or $300 a year. Our secure online donation center is available for you or you can mail your check to MOTE, Inc., 17150 Via del Campo Court, Suite 102, San Diego, CA 92127
